The Trianon and Marie Antoinette's Estate

Across the gardens from the Palace lies a quieter Versailles: two smaller palaces and a make-believe village built for a queen. It opens at noon and is closed on Mondays.

The Estate of Trianon is the part of Versailles that belongs most to Marie Antoinette. Louis XVI gave her the Petit Trianon in June 1774, and in the 1780s she had a whole hamlet built nearby, with cottages, a farm and a pond. The Grand Trianon stands close by. Together, with their gardens, they make up what the château calls the Estate of Trianon, or Marie-Antoinette's Estate.

This guide covers what you can visit, the ticket and hours, the story of the queen at Versailles, the Hamlet, how to get there from the Palace, and which tours include it. If you are planning a full day, the best time to visit guide gives the official order of the day.

The quick answer

Yes, you can visit Marie Antoinette's house: the Petit Trianon, which Louis XVI gave her in June 1774, and the Queen's Hamlet, built for her from 1783 to 1786. The Estate of Trianon ticket costs €15 (EEA €12) and the Passport includes it. It opens at 12:00, until 18:30 in the high season and 17:30 in the low season, and is closed on Mondays. From the Palace it is 30 minutes on foot, or 20 minutes by little train or electric vehicle.

What is the Estate of Trianon?

The Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, their gardens and the Queen's Hamlet, at the far side of the gardens from the Palace.

The Estate of Trianon ticket covers all of it: the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, their gardens, the Queen's Hamlet (from noon) and temporary exhibitions. It is a separate area from the Palace, with its own hours: 12:00 to 18:30 in the high season and 12:00 to 17:30 in the low season, closed on Mondays.

The château's ideal day puts it in the afternoon, from noon to 16:30, after the Palace at 9:00 and the gardens from 10:00 to noon. It sits at the end of a long walk through the gardens and the Park.

Can you visit Marie Antoinette's house?

Yes. The Petit Trianon, given to her by Louis XVI in June 1774, and the Queen's Hamlet are both open to visitors with a Trianon ticket or a Passport.

The Petit Trianon came first, a gift from Louis XVI in June 1774. The Hamlet followed from 1783, a cluster of cottages built for her. Both are part of the Estate of Trianon ticket, €15, and of the Passport. The Hamlet opens from noon.

If you want a guide to tie it all together, the bike day includes timed Palace entry, both Trianons and Marie Antoinette's Estate, with train tickets from Paris and a market picnic. Bikes ride in the Park, not the formal gardens, and on show days the gardens cost extra on that tour.

Did Marie Antoinette live in the Palace of Versailles?

Yes. She married the future Louis XVI in the Palace of Versailles on 16 May 1770, aged fourteen, and lived at Versailles until the royal family was forced to leave on 6 October 1789.

She was born on 2 November 1755. Four years after the wedding, in June 1774, Louis XVI gave her the Petit Trianon, and the Hamlet followed in the 1780s. So she had both: the court in the Palace, and her own estate across the gardens.

The end came quickly. A crowd arrived at Versailles on 5 October 1789, and the next day, 6 October, the royal family was forced to leave. Today the estate is owned by the French state and has been run as a public establishment since 1995.

What is the Queen's Hamlet?

A small village built for Marie Antoinette from 1783 to 1786 by Richard Mique, with the painter Hubert Robert: 12 cottages, 5 for the queen and 7 working farm buildings.

It was a real working farm as well as a setting: seven of the twelve buildings were working farm buildings, and five were for the queen's own use. Richard Mique built it with the painter Hubert Robert, between 1783 and 1786.

The Hamlet opens from noon with the rest of the Estate of Trianon. The château's ideal day puts the whole estate last, from noon to 16:30, so the Hamlet fits naturally at the end of the afternoon.

Both Trianons and the Hamlet by golf cart and bike, timed to the weekend fountains from April to October.

How do you get from the Palace to the Trianon?

About 30 minutes on foot across the gardens and Park, or about 20 minutes by little train or small electric vehicle.

  • On foot: about 30 minutes, the most direct way through the gardens.
  • Little train: about 20 minutes; runs every day except Mondays.
  • Small electric vehicle: hired on site, every day 10:00 to 18:45; about 20 minutes.
  • Bikes: allowed in the Park on designated paths, forbidden in the gardens.

Since the Trianon is closed on Mondays anyway, the little train's day off makes no difference to a Trianon visit.

Can you see Marie Antoinette's room?

The Passport covers both places tied to her, the Palace and the Petit Trianon; we do not list which individual rooms are open.

The Palace has about 2,300 rooms, and the visit route inside the Palace and the Trianon is set by the château. We would rather not guess which rooms are open on your day: check the official site's visit information before you go. What we can say is that the Passport includes both the Palace, with a timed entry, and the Estate of Trianon, with the Petit Trianon she was given in 1774.

A guide helps here. The guided tour with a Passport gives you a guide in the Palace and the Passport for the Trianon afterwards; see Versailles tickets explained for every option.
